Sticks + Bars
Youth Marimba Ensemble
Sticks+Bars is a marimba ensemble open to DC youths in grades 5-12. Focusing mainly on the lively, get-up-and-dance music of Zimbabwe and South Africa, the ensemble is a melting pot for students in and around Washington, DC attending public, private, charter, and home schools. The primary goal of our group is to experience the joy that comes from performing for a live audience.
Our students have recently performed the Kennedy Center on the Millennium Stage (twice!), at Strathmore Hall in Bethesda, MD and jammed with Ladysmith Black Mambazo from South Africa. We've performed at the TEDxMidatlantic Conference at Sidney Harman Hall in DC, in Ithaca, NY for a gospel festival at Ithaca College, the grand-opening of the District Wharf, with the Venezuelan group La Parranda el Clavo, for the Halcyon Awards Gala in Union Station, Mayor Muriel Bowser's State of the State Address at Arena Stage, the American Orff Schulwerk Conference in Atlantic City, NJ, and various Washington DC Farmers' Markets and street festivals. We have interacted with international groups from Venezuela, Colombia and South Africa, and have taken field trips to marimba makers and musical performances.
Sticks+Bars is directed by Premila Mistry and is generously supported by DC Bilingual Public Charter School with the use of their rehearsal space at 33 Riggs Road, NE, Washington, DC. (enter from Riggs Road NE into the parking lot).
